I studied Computational Linguistics and German Language and Literature at the University of Trier (Germany), and received my M.A. in 1995. From 1995 to 1998 I worked as a database manager at the Max Planck Institute of Psycholinguistics (The Netherlands) and as a research assistant at the Humboldt University of Berlin. In 2001 I obtained a Ph.D. at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics under the supervision of Prof Harald Baayen and Prof Robert Schreuder. I then worked for one year as a postdoctoral fellow in the Linguistics department at the University of Alberta (Canada), before taking up a position as a Lecturer (=Assistant Professor) at the University of Birmingham in 2002. I was promoted to Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in 2008 and to Reader (Senior Associate Professor) in 2019.
